Taxpayers save $78 million as FHA expedites bridge project reviews

GasBuddy Blog -- You don't hear this very often -- the Federal Highway Administration has come up with a way to save taxpayers money and speed the time it takes to repair old bridges, by doing away with individual historic preservation reviews for common bridge types built after 1945.

Eliminating the red tape is easier said than done, but for the FHWA it's working. Before older bridges can be repaired or replaced, they must undergo an individual historic preservation review. FHWA has identified approximately 196,000 bridges that are old but not historic and could be exempt from individual review by substituting a programmatic review, streamlining a process that would save taxpayers roughly $78 million in project funds over the next 10 years that would...

FHA? FHWA! The government is good at creating Red Tape, eliminating it is better. Necessary checks and balances for projects should already be in place. Fix the most needed bridge or road repair or replacements first, then move on to other necessary but less demanding projects. Save $78 million here but blow it on some solar panel business that will declare bankruptcy. A very small savings in a huge sea of government debt! Government thinking gone wild! The federal and state fuel tax is for the repair and replacement of roads and bridges, just make sure it is used for that and nothing else. Do Not place the state fuel tax money in the state's general fund to be used elsewhere at the whim of some state official! Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, has a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!
