I am happy to see that someone agrees with me. Unfortunately, in my professional circle, I am a minority in my opinion on public transit, especially regarding light rail systems. Most of the pro transit polls are biased and they tweak the numbers to get the desired results. Also, the way they count trips makes it sound like there are a lot more people riding transit. For example if you ride the bus and you have to make two transfres to get from point A to B, they cout it as three trips even though you are really only making one trip. Where I live, if I tried to take the bus to work it would require between 2-2.5 hours. I make the same trip in my car in 30 minutes. so why would I ever think of riding the bus? I want to travel on my own schedule not on one dictaed by some bureaucrat.

My answer is to go to the stock market. There are lots of companies out there that pay generous dividends. Dividend payments have the second benefit that they are taxed at a lower rate than interest payments. There are over 100 companies that have a dividend yield higher than 3%. Yes, their stock prices may vary at any given time. But if you stay in for the long term, stocks go up in value with more consistency and less risk of return fluctuations compared to fixed-income investments.
