This is how I FINALLY quit. If at first you don't succeed etc. Keep trying. l bought some cheap filters to plug up with kleenex and stuck the cicarette in the holders. The kleenex caught the nicotine and l emptied them nightly (had a package of a dozen or so). They were nasty looking and l was happy that nastyness wasn't getting to my lungs. After 40 years of smoking l could imagine what my lungs looked like from looking at the kleenex. l also went to non-smoking places as much as l could. Library and such. l told myself that l was saving the money to use for "this or that" whatever l had wanted. l used as many ploys as l could and one l used was telling myself that if l wanted to smoke again, l kept one pack of cigarettes in the car. Because in one of my attempts l had poured honey or syrup all over the last carton l had and then had to go buy more because l wasn't ready. So this time l didn't make myself feel denied, but rather complimented my success. Day by day and soon it was no longer an issue. The hardest for me was a cigarette with my coffee. ALWAYS. So l used the nearly plugged up filters and soon my body was rid of the craving desirebecause l had removed all of that nicotene from my body. Good luck. lt is so worth it. Smile.

I stopped because of my kids. I didn't want them to get the habit. It's a bad idea to smoke, because it affects the body too much for me besides, I want to live a long and healthy life, and not have Lung Cancer, or anything else that smoking might cause. I just put it in my mind that I didn't need to smoke, and I quit Cold Turkey just like that. I put faith in myself and I had the will power to do it. You have to really be determine, to do what you know is the right thing to help your body strong and healthy again. Put all your faith in God to help you through this, and you'll make it. Ask God to help you to get through it, and you will. He answers you. I know this for sure, because He answered me. I stopped smoking in 1989 on September 16th, AND I haven't smoked a cigarette sense that day, and now I can say,"I FEEL GOOD ABOUT IT",

WHEN YOU DECIDE TO QUIT,SIT DOWN AND ASK THE LORD TO GIVE YOU HIS HELP, AND A TIME AND A DATE TO STOP.THEN ASK FOR TOTAL RELIEF FROM ALL CRAVINGS,AGGRAVATION, AND ANXIETY, RELATING TO YOUR QUITTING. IF YOU BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART, THAT JESUS CHRIST IS YOUR LORD AND SAVIOR AS I DI,YOU WILL BE COMPLETELY FREE AND CURED OF SMOKING BY THE TIME AND DATE THE LORD GIVES TO YOU IN PRAYER !!!

Quit with a buddy, my husband and I quit cold turkey six weeks ago. We both put on about ten pounds, and I made April my "eat anything I want month". I bought a hula hoop and am using it to burn off the food. I figure it will be easier to lose the weight than to quit again. I also joined Gasbuddy for something to do with m y hands!

Do hypnosis and positive statements and change your behavior patterns. So if you wake up and smoke, wake up and eat some breakfast first. Set an alarm 1 time per hour and if you want to smoke, think first, then if you smoke don't smoke for 2 hours and increase your time as you quit! Good luck!

When I quit smoking it was cold turkey. Just replace your bad habit with a different habit. It's hard the first week then it's all good from there.

Chantix works very well, My mom quit after 35 years smoking and has not had one in 2 years as of Feb 1 coming up. However I had terrible terrible side effects from the Chantix and had to stop taking it. I actually went back on it again after a few months had passed from my bad experience to have even worse side effects. and ultimately had to discontinue my use again. now I am smoking about a pack a day and have no options that I know left to try quitting. Ive done all the programs and patches and artificial cigs all with little or not success. I had a prescription about 10 years ago for wellbutrin (anti depressant) that is commonly used to treat people looking to quit smoking. I had the best results with that medication until my insurance was dropped and I was no longer able to afford the pills. Also the posts here about exercise are the next best thing I can think of too. I work out hard daily and that really detours my thoughts from smoking to health and can usually buy me a few hours without lighting up. best of luck to you. didnt realize this thread was started nearly a year ago so I hope it helps

I quit a little over two years ago after about 40 years of puffing.
I should be an expert on quitting as I have quit many many times over those years. And I always went back and felt like a failure. Had to do something different.
I began by celebrating my successful days of no smoking. I thought about a smoker friend of mine who caught a flu, which complicated into pneumonia. He almost died and spent about a week in terror, unable to breathe. Shortly after this, I caught a cold. I looked at my smokes for a long time, and realized I was done.
I meant to throw the pack away as I usually did when I quit, but somehow I forgot. Two weeks later I found the pack and lit one up, and immediately my mouth taseed like something scraped from my shoe. I threw away the butt and placed the pack on a parking meter for someone else to find.
I found an emptiness where the cigarettes used to be, of course. I filled it with lots of water, and I took vitimin C supplements for 6 months or so. I weigh 20 pounds more than I did when smoking, but I'm tall enough that this is not a problem. And I haven't had a cold since.
Good luck, cousin!

My aunt recently quit her pack a day habbit and she needed something to do instead. She started having a soda nearly every time she would have had a cigarette. it was easier to cut down on that then and she eventually went to two a day. She did gain a little weight but she switched to diet soda and is doing absolutely fine. She does find it a little difficult when people are her are doing it though.

I've heard hypnosis works. My uncle was a smoker for about 20 years and he quit the same day of hypnosis. I am a smoker and have smoked for 6 years and would give it a try but don't know of any places around me that offer it.

After many failed attempts, the last time I kept a open pack of cigarettes in the freezer and got rid of the rest. I knew I could have a smoke anytime I wanted but was making the choice to NOT smoke when faced with the "urge". This kept me from having panic attack's about where am I going to get a smoke, gotta have a smoke moments. After a year I threw them out and never looked back, its been 14years now. Save that cigarette money you would have spent and treat yourself to something wonderful on your year anniversary. A reward is always nice. good luck

I quit smoking 8 years ago because the cost of cigs were causing my bank account to overdraft all because I needed cigs. I stopped hanging out at bars (caused me to want to smoke), stopped drinking, stopped drinking coffee, and stopped hanging out with friends who smoked (for at least 8 months). I saved a lot of money that way.

I actually read about a woman who threw out all of her cigarettes except for one, which she taped to her kitchen cabinet. That cigarette was going to be her last one, so she tried to use it sparingly. Every time she couldn't resist her craving to smoke, she would take the cigarette, light it, and smoke it for a second (or a short breath), and then she'd put it out and tape it back. I guess eventually the cigarette got so dirty and nasty she just got disgusted by cigarettes all together. I wish I could find the article that I read this from, but it was a while ago. I can't tell you for sure whether this is real or fake.
But one true story I do know was my school friend: her parents gave her allowance every month, which she used that money to buy cigarettes. But one day, she tried Jamba Juice and got addicted to their smoothies. Eventually, she had to choose between spending her allowance money on cigarettes and Jamba Juice. I guess because Jamba Juice tasted much better than cigarettes and was theoretically "healthier," she gave up cigarettes for Jamba Juice. Now, she just needs to battle her smoothie addiction. =P

I have never been a smoker, but here is a technique that has worked for some people I know. Try just smoking one less cigarette every day. If that is a little too much to ask, try one less every two days. You will lower your tolerance to the nicotine, and one day may be able to quit altogether.
