What we are seeing here is the evolution of the old 'station wagon'. You remember the ones we grew up with? It evolved into the big SUVs like the Chevy Suburban and Ford Explorer/Jeep Grand Cherokee which when equipped properly could go off road with ease. Now, after many generations, it is the compact SUV. There is not much Sport, no off road Utility, and yes it is a Vehicle. Why can't they call it what it is - a compact Station Wagon?

Nice article and I liked the mix of testers. That said, I have to say the choice was flawed. If I were considering those six, my first choice would be a Toyota RAV4.

I wonder why the Toyota RAV4 wasn't included. We love ours.

I was liking the 2013 escape until I went to the lot looked at them, they need to do something with the cheap plastic faux grill inserts

These SUV are too small, and thus unsafe.

These are not really Sports Utility Vehicles but rather cross-overs since none can really be taken off a mainstream roadway.
