General Motors Co. (GM) took to a Georgia racetrack to show that its first compact Cadillac in a quarter- century drives as well as a BMW 3 Series. The trickier part will be getting it to sell as well.

While the horsepower of the Cadillac ATS is important, its lease payment ultimately may determine the success of the new model. Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW)’s BMW brand and Daimler AG (DAI)’s Mercedes-Benz have fueled much of their growth with monthly lease deals on the 3 Series and C-Class that have, in some cases, dipped as low as $299 a month. High resale values help, too.

“If the price is similar to the Europeans and the monthly payment similar, it will be a challenge to reach their volumes,” Tom Libby, lead North American analyst for R.L. Polk & Co., said in a telephone interview

Cadillac has built some nice cars recently. Test drove the CTS-V. Nice alternate to the E-63 and the M5. Unfortunately, the CTS-V is not available in AWD which is very benefitial to have for Canadian winters. If the high performance version of the ATS was available in AWD and were priced right, it could be a good option.

Cadillac has made great strides to break into the luxury sport market. But both BMW and Mercedes-Benz have a global marketing strategy and aren't focused exclusively on the US market. They have room to lose some market share here without having to double-down on R&D to go chasing after the new caddies.

remember back in the '80s when gm took a chevy cavalier and tried to make it into a caddy. And they wonder why everybody in the world was kicking our butts.

Not a good move for GM IMHO. Cadillac is known for large, unwieldy, comfortable cars. Not the sport luxury that they're trying to portray. I doubt many consumers would switch from BMW or MBenz, especially with GM's track record of being unreliable.

I wouldn't buy any of the three--Cadillac, BMW, or Benz. But if I had to choose, I would probably choose Benz.
