Hello mileena202. I have 2 in my Chevrolet Equinox.
You are correct about the cost of an airbag. This has been an insurance hot potato as it was their lobby groups who made it mandatory as an SRS (Supplimental Restraint System). It was not a replacement for seatbelts, but an added safety to those who did or did not wear the belts. You've already created a topic on the different generations of airbags, which I've addressed, so there is no point in going over them again. Suffice it to say, the insurance companies gave you a discount when they first came out and since have elimated that discount. The problems are threefold. Since they are easily accessable for replacement either in the dash, the steering wheel or elsewhere, they are a hot item to steal and easily done. Newer vehicles have a sensor in the passenger seat to prevent deployment on that side, if there is under 50 lbs of weight or less. This was done due to infant fatalities by earlier generations of SRS airbags. By the way, did you get the Toyota's sensor fixed -- it was always on as I remember? Another criteria is when to deploy an airbag. Originally it was a frontal 35 MPH or greater impact. Computers now have different algorithms for when to deploy. The third issue is how long will an airbag last being that many are on the top of the dashboard on the passenger side in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees.
Further deails can be found using a google search on "SRS Airbags". Wickipedia has a very detailed of their development and implementation.
